How To Set And Achieve Goals

Happy new year everyone and welcome to 2016!

I hope you all had a great New Year’s eve. I’m sure a lot of you were pretty tired and hung over on New Year’s Day.

But today is the 2nd of January and now it’s time to get back into the right mindset.

In this article I am going to explain to you how to set and achieve your goals for the year.

This will help you whether you have already set your goals or if you haven’t and don’t know how.

2015 flew by and 2016 will be the same, where do you want to be at the end of this year? You need to set and achieve goals this year that are important to you. What do you want to do? Where do you want to be? What do you want to have?

Only you can answer these questions for yourself, you only have one life, think about what you want and I will help you make a plan to get that. Your goals can be work related, money/business related, health and fitness related, mindset/psychological related, family related, travel related, the list goes on. Decide what you want out of your life and go after it this year.

It’s important not to set too many goals though, the average person works full time and may have a family to take care of, realistically you should have 1 or 2 goals that you want to achieve. You need to make these the most important to you.

You need to set goals that challenge you but are still realistic, many times you will see quotes and motivational pictures saying thing like “set goals so big they will scare you” or  something along those lines. While these quotes are motivating, the truth is you can set extremely high goals all you want, but reality will catch up with you and you will probably not achieve them which can have a negative impact your inner strength as well as other areas of your life.

An example setting a goal too high could be something like “I will make a million dollars a year by 31/12/2016” when you are working at a job paying 50k a year. What is going to happen is you will take extremely high uncalculated risks if you set a goal that high for example you would start some business without thinking if it’s a good plan and you will crash and burn leaving you in debt or bankrupt, worst then you were before.

A more realistic goal could be, “by 31/12/2016, I will be in business for myself” this way you could spend the year planning and preparing yourself to start a decent business with a medium level of risk.

A good way to set goals is using the SMART system, that means goals that are,

Now that you have set your goals, you can’t just read them every day and expect to achieve them.

You need daily action. What I like to do is think about what daily efforts are required to achieve my goals?

For example let’s say your goal is to become a state tennis player by 31/12/2016, think about what you need to do daily to make you reach that goal.

I would think you would need to join a tennis club and practice every day after work, work on your technique until you have nailed it and can do it without thinking, watch you tube videos of pro tennis players and watch what they do right, practice on your weekends, play tournaments, basically do whatever it takes to not only achieve but try to smash your goal.

What I like to do is write up a weekly plan for myself on Sunday nights, go over your schedule and create a daily and weekly timetable for yourself.

An example of your daily template could look like this,

Week day template

6.30am wake up.

8-5pm work.

6pm home.

7pm dinner.

8-10pm tennis practice.

10.30pm home, shower and bed.

Also you should plan and write up a weekly timetable to stay focused

Monday – work and tennis practice

Tuesday – work and tennis practice

Wednesday – watch videos about technique and pro tennis players

Thursday – work and tennis practice.

Friday – off day, relax, (or tennis practice if you are super obsessed haha)

Saturday – 9am-12pm (tennis tournaments)

Sunday – (whatever you want to do to help you on your tennis goals)

You get the idea, I don’t know anything about tennis but the idea is to take a lot of action, if you just set goals and read them every day but never take action and always take days off then you are not giving yourself the best chance of success.

If you took daily action like the above example, you can guarantee that you will achieve your goals, you will better at your goal then 99 percent of people, most people won’t put in that much consistent effort.

Another tool I like to use to keep motivated is a calendar, you can use a calendar in electronic format on your phone or laptop or you can use a physical calendar, I myself like to buy a physical calendar for the year, I feel more motivated using a pen for some reason, every night cross out that day and you should write notes for upcoming days, this way you are planning ahead instead of winging it.

So there you have it people, decide what you want in your life, create a plan, and take massive action to ensure success.

A year from now you will look back and be amazed at how much you have achieved.
