How much water should you drink?
The human body is 60% water. Water is necessary for many important bodily functions such as
- Digestion (if you are constipated it could be that you are not drinking enough water)
- Energy (when your body lacks water your blood, muscles and joints are less lubricated and this slows you down causing you to feel lethargic
- Healthy skin
- Cleansing the body of toxins
- Transportation of nutrients
And many other benefits
But how much water should you drink each day? Everywhere you look it says everyone should drink 8 glasses of water a day.
But it depends on each person, there size, activity level etc.
So one day I decided to do an experiment and drink a lot of water, I drank at least 8 glasses a day but was usually even more. I wanted to see if drinking more water would make a bigger impact to my life.
What I found was that once I was properly hydrated, the benefits of being hydrated are maxed out, once you reach this stage you just keep having to go to the toilet to urinate.
When you are dehydrated, you feel thirsty, less energetic, and all the important bodily functions that require water are not operating at maximum efficiency.
When you are hydrated, you feel more alert, energized and are better able to be the best version of yourself.
But don’t worry about drinking exactly 8 glasses a day and stopping there. You may need more or less.
These are the signs you need to drink water.
- Your urine is a yellow or orange colour (when you are properly hydrated it should be light straw colour or clear.
- Low energy
- Sweating a lot from heat or exercise (this means you need to drink water now because it won’t be long until you are dehydrated)
- Dry mouth/eyes (feel thirsty)
But don’t think you can drink heaps of water in the morning and you will be sweet for the rest of the day.
Think of the body as a cup with hole in the bottom, if you pour water in it will slowly empty out through the cup and the water in the cup at present time is your hydration, if you pour in too much at one time the body doesn’t need it all so it will waste it in urination, but it needs a certain amount of water all day so your job is to drink water in moderate amounts throughout the day to keep the water in the cup full.
So how do you drink enough water each day? Well personally when I wake up I have 1 to 2 glasses of water on an empty stomach as your body has gone 8 hours or more without fluid intake. Drinking water first thing in the morning is good for your body.
Throughout the day I drink water and judge my hydration levels when I go to the toilet, I also get water through some of the foods I drink.
If I go the gym I take a water bottle and usually get through the whole thing during my session.
I drink water with meals, at night I try to keep my water intake low as I don’t want to wake up in the middle of the night needing to urinate.
As far as what type of water to drink, bottled or tap, I personally drink tap and bottled water, I don’t think it matters that much, if you live in a developed country like I do (Australia) you will be confident that the tap water is of a high standard, besides the fluoride in tap water is good for your teeth.
If you live in a country with bad tap water, obviously you should buy bottled water.
I hope I have clarified the importance of drinking water and how much you should really drink.
