BODY COMPOSITION SCALES

I had always judged my progress with building muscle by my body weight. I had some basic scales. If my body weight was going up it must mean that I’m building muscle. Right? Not quite.

A few years ago. My cousin suggested I go on his (Tanita) body composition scales to get an accurate measurement of my body weight and composition.

Prior to this I had not known about these scales or what information they give you so I was excited to try them out.

I stood on the scales while holding sensors in my hands and my cousin recorded the information.

With these scales I was able to find out,

  • My body fat percentage
  • Visceral fat
  • Body Mass Index
  • Body water percentage
  • Bone mass
  • Muscle mass
  • Metabolic age
  • Basel metabolic rate

I was amazed at how much information these scales give you compare to some normal scales.

You see simply stepping on some normal scales does not tell you much. Ever wonder why sometimes you see yourself in the mirror and you’re looking good but your weight has not reflected this?

It could be due to not properly recording your body’s weight.

For example you might be trying to lose weight so you go to the gym and work out. After a few months you have built some muscle which weighs more than fat and have lost some fat. You step on the scales only to realise you have not lost any weight! How could this be when you have been putting so much effort into this? Don’t worry; you are getting results you just don’t know what’s going on unless you weigh yourself correctly.

Your body fat might be a certain percentage but your visceral fat might be higher or lower.

Your body water might be higher or lower.

Your bone mass might be different from someone similar you are comparing yourself with.

Your muscle mass might be lower or higher.

You see?
