A DAY WITHOUT MY PHONE

The other day my phone stopped working. It just completely died; I think the battery died or something.

I tried all sorts of things to get it working again but I couldn’t. But I wasn’t too fussed as my phone contract was due to expire so no problem. I would go to the store tomorrow after work and get a new phone.

1 DAY (WORKDAY) WITHOUT PHONE. WHAT I LEARNT

Having no phone all day reminded me how much we are all reliant on phones today. It was only in the early 2000’s we all started getting Nokia mobile phones and when the iPhone came out around 2010 that’s when everyone started slowly becoming glued to their phones.

Before that in the 90s, 80s and all of human history before that, we lived very much like I did that day when I had no phone.

Throughout the day I wrote down some notes on a piece of paper and have listed them below.

CAN’T CHECK TIME

I have no clock in my work space and I wasn’t wearing a watch so I literally had to ask people what the time was throughout the day.

This is something I took for granted. Before mobile phones everyone wore watches because they had to. Today those who do buy watches buy more for the style/accessory reason of it.

NEEDED TO CHECK THE DATE/FUTURE DATES

Another thing I took for granted. We use to have calendars before phones.

NEEDED MY PHONE TORCH

I was trying to see in a dark space. Normally I would just whip out my smart phone and turn the torch function on but now I needed an actual torch.

CAN’T CALL PEOPLE

This one really made me realize how slow and more difficult life would have been not so long ago. When I needed to talk to someone at my work I couldn’t just call them anymore. I had to physically walk to where I thought they may be to speak with them. And I had no way of contacting anyone outside of my work do to distance.

It must have been hard for people back in the day. Writing letters to people and then waiting to receive a letter back.

CAN’T FIND INFORMATION

Usually if I want to quickly find information about anything I simply google it. I couldn’t do this now. Progress was a lot slower back then. If you needed information you would have to ask someone who was qualified or you had to go to a library or something.

People have access to all the knowledge in the world now in the palm of their hand!

IT WAS MORE BORING

Usually I keep myself entertained at work by browsing social media, YouTube, Snapchat etc. without these things I quickly realized how boring my work day actually is haha.

THE POSITIVE THINGS

It wasn’t all bad though. Because I had no phone to distract me I had nothing else to do than actually do my job. I found I was more productive, clearer thinking and more focused. I felt more relaxed and in the moment. I liked this feeling; it was really refreshing to go a day without my phone for a change.

TRY THE EXPERIMENT YOURSELF

One day leave your phone at home and tell your work you forgot it and you will go the whole day without it. Or just leave it in your room when you are not at work and take note of what life is like without it.
